Energy economy in the post fossil era
Renewable energy installations are globally growing by 58%/year in peak power, extrapolation of the development of the last 20 years the peak power of renewable energy will reach the average world energy demand in 2024 and will cover the world energy demand around 2030. The main challenge remains to store renewable intermittent energy in an efficient, economically and resource wise feasible way in order to provide electricity and heat on demand. Depending on the application, the frequency of energy demand and the cost various types of energy storage are required, e.g. batteries, hydrogen, synthetic fuels. All technologies are under development and the future implementation will strongly depend on the availability of the resources and the cost of the storage systems. A demonstrator that allows an average Swiss person to live entirely on renewable energy as well as an analysis for the conversion of whole Switzerland on renewable energy will be presented.
